U.S. Representative Scott DesJarlais, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, addressed the Department of Defense missile defense and defeat programs during a hearing in Washington, D.C., according to an Apr. 15 statement.

DesJarlais said that the President’s budget for fiscal year 2027 includes significant investments in missile defense capabilities. He emphasized that this is important as recent global conflicts have shown the need for strong air and missile defense systems.

In his remarks, DesJarlais stated, “While we continue to await programmatic details, I was pleased to see the topline levels reflect a strong investment in missile defense capabilities.” He highlighted three key areas: increased research and development funding for the Missile Defense Agency to over $12.3 billion; about $23 billion allocated for production of missile defense interceptors; and more than $17.5 billion requested for the Golden Dome initiative aimed at protecting the homeland from air and missile threats.

DesJarlais also noted challenges related to funding predictability since some initiatives are part of a broader mandatory spending request totaling $350 billion. He said continued cooperation between witnesses and committee members will be necessary as budget discussions proceed.

He expressed appreciation for improved communication from Department officials regarding Golden Dome plans but mentioned ongoing concerns with information classification levels. “However, the increased engagement by General Guetlein and Mr. Berkowitz on this topic is welcome and deserves acknowledgment,” DesJarlais said.

In closing his remarks at the hearing, DesJarlais thanked Generals Gainey and Guillot for their decades of service: “We have enjoyed working with you both and have benefited greatly from your unwavering professionalism and candor.”

As Congress considers next steps on appropriations tied to these priorities, further hearings are expected as part of ongoing oversight.
