FOIA Request to Southern Union State Community College Regarding Chinese National Students on May 16, 2025.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, EC Alabama News has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Southern Union State Community College. This request seeks detailed information concerning Chinese National students enrolled at the institution.
The request specifically asks for documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, including their department of study. If student names are protected under privacy laws, we have requested that the total number of such students be provided, broken down by department. Additionally, we seek information on scholarships awarded to these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship.
Furthermore, we have requested details about any scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council and policies or procedures in place at the university to monitor students—particularly Chinese Nationals—to protect intellectual property and other confidential information.
This inquiry is made in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing transparency in government actions. As members of the media, our role involves gathering and reporting news to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public. We believe this request is crucial for informing the American electorate about how educational institutions manage international student affairs and safeguard sensitive information.
We await a response from Southern Union State Community College and will continue to update our readers as more information becomes available.
