The Jacksonville State baseball dropped its first home midweek contest on Tuesday with a 13-3 setback to Alabama State on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
Freshman Will Fincher, seniors T.J. Reeves and Carson Crowe all combined for seven of Jax State’s 11 hits on the night, but it was the Hornets’ offense that put together a 14-hit outburst and had four big innings to claim the first of two meetings between the two clubs this season. Jax State will travel to the Watkins Wheeler Baseball Complex on March 21.
The Gamecocks took an early lead in the contest with an RBI single from Reeves. The run-scoring base hit gave the Birmingham, Alabama outfielder his 18th of the season, ranking him second in the ASUN through the end of competition on Tuesday. ASU touched Jax State starter Trey Fortner for three runs on six hits in his four innings of work. The Hornets strung together four of the six hits off of him in a three-run third inning. The Hornets expanded the lead with back-to-back three spots on the board in the fifth and sixth inning.
Fincher, from Powder Springs, Georgia, has played his way into the designated hitters spot with his play over his last four games. On Tuesday, he put together his first three-hit outing as a Gamecock. Fincher tallied singles in three consecutive plate appearances.
Jax State put together scoring threats throughout the contest, but could not deliver the key hot to drive in runs as it stranded 11 in the affair.
Junior Mason Maners extended his on-base streak to 24 games after a one-out double to left field in his third plate appearance. Maners now has put together a double-digit hitting streak with a hit in the last 10 games. Crowe drove Maners home on his second hit of the day for JSU’s second run of the night. Junior Javon Hernandez added an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Jax State continues midweek action on Wednesday with the Tigers of Auburn visiting Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Tickets will be available at the stadium ticket office. All Jax State students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. The in-state battle will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
