Cost of college went up for all students at Southern Union State Community College

In-state tuition and fees rose 7.2 percent for 2018-19 at Southern Union State Community College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Alabama residents paid $4,440 to attend the two-year public institution this year – $300 more than the $4,140 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 87.2 percent more than residents this year, or $8,310. Their price tag grew 7.8 percent from $7,710 in 2017-18.

About 92 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Alabama residents. And about 7 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 81 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 697 students received grants or scholarships totaling $4.2 million and 239 students took out student loans totaling more than $1.2 million.

Including all undergraduates (4,531), 2,596 students used grants or scholarships totaling $12.1 million, and 974 students took out $5.5 million in federal student loans.
