Summer Term Survival Guide for Students

JSU’s summer semester has finally arrived, but it’s not all work and no play. Students can soak up the sun and have fun while getting ahead on their studies. With the following Summer Term Survival Guide, students can balance enjoying their summer staycation in the ‘Ville and passing their courses with ease! 

Take Advantage of Academic Support Resources

If you ever face a tough subject, assignment or transition and need some help, the university has you covered! As a student at JSU, you get FREE access to many learning resources that are here to help you succeed in your academic career. These include: 

  • Tutoring Services: The Student Success Center provides free tutoring in most core courses. Students can schedule an in-person or virtual tutoring session this summer using JSU Navigate. In-person appointments will take place in the Student Success Center, which is located on the second floor of Houston Cole Library. Be sure to check the summer tutoring schedule before making an appointment.
  • The Writing Center: If you need assistance with a writing assignment, the Writing Center is the place to go! The Writing Center can help you better understand areas in which you are struggling within the writing process, whether that’s starting a paper or revising it. The Writing Center is open for in-person and virtual writing consultations throughout the summer semester. Please check the summer hours before scheduling a consultation.
  • Online @ JSU: Have you ever been working on an online assignment when Canvas suddenly stops working? Issues with technology are common with online courses, but Online @ JSU is here to help with any problems that arise this summer. Online @ JSU offers support for Canvas, Honorlock, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, MyJSU and much more. Offices hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1-4:30 p.m., support is available 24/7 for resources like Canvas and Honorlock. 
Have Some Fun in the Sun

Don’t let stress dim your fun this summer! There are many exciting events happening on campus during the summer that are the perfect opportunities to relax, have fun and make new friends. Mark your calendar for the following:

  • Student Pool Parties: Dive into the summer fun at the Rec Center’s outdoor pool. The SGA is hosting pool parties for students on May 17 and June 21, 5-6:30 p.m. Don’t forget to bring a cute swimsuit and take lots of pics!
  • Student Cookouts: Who doesn’t love grabbing a hotdog or hamburger from the grill after a sizzling summer day? Come hangout with the SGA at the Rec Center’s outdoor pool and grab a bite to eat on May 25 and July 7, 5-6:30 p.m. 
  • Student Climb Nights How high can you climb? Come find out at the Student Climb Night events hosted by the SGA on May 31 and July 13, 5-6:30 p.m. Don’t forget to wear appropriate rock-climbing attire and follow any safety guidelines as instructed.
  • UREC Rafting Trip: Do you want to explore the Ocoee River? Join the Rec Center on a guided rafting trip, featuring magnificent views and accompanied by your fellow Gamecocks. The cost for students is $35, which covers rafting fees and transportation. Meals are not included. Register on the UREC website
Summer Hours

Want to catch up on some studying at the library, stay fit by working out at the Rec Center, or grab a snack with friends at the TMB? Don’t worry! Plenty of on-campus facilities will be open during the summer semester, so you can accomplish what you need without driving out of town. Just be sure to check out these hours of operation before heading anywhere on campus.

Offices

University offices will be open normal business hours except for the following days: Memorial Day, May 30; Juneteenth, June 20; and Independence Day, July 4.  

Dining

  • Jack Hopper Dining Hall: Monday-Friday, 7-8 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 5-6 p.m. Closed on weekends.
  • Chick-fil-A: Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
  • WOW: Friday-Sunday, 12-7 p.m. 
  • The Red Rooster: Monday-Saturday, 12-7 p.m.
  • Gamecock Diner, Freshens, Mein Bowl, The Peak and Jazzman's: Will be closed during summer.
Other Facilities

  • University Recreation Center: Monday-Friday, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 12-8 p.m.
  • Houston Cole Library: May 16 to July 30: Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Sunday, 2-10 p.m.; July 30 to August 14: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed on weekends.
  • Bookstore: Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  
  • RMC/JSU Health Center: Will be open during its normal hours.
  • University Police Department: Will be open 24/7 during summer.
  • Counseling Center: Will be open during university business hours.
  • JSU Ride: Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
