JSU Drops Final Match of Four on the Road at Georgia State

The Jacksonville State soccer team wrapped up a four-match road trip on Sunday with a 3-0 loss to Georgia State at the GSU Soccer Complex.

After spending the last two weekends on the road, the Gamecocks will not need the travel bags until the end of September as the next five matches will be contested on the pitch at the Gamecock Soccer Field. The homestand will start on Friday with a 7 p.m. contest against Alabama State. Jax State (0-6) will host Troy next Sunday to wrap up the non-conference portion of the 2022 slate. Admission is free to all JSU soccer matches and both outings will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Panthers tallied three goals in the first 26 minutes of the contest to take control of the match and hold the Gamecock offense off the scoreboard. GSU's Elena Diaz put the first goal on the scoreboard with a shot off of her right foot into the bottom right of the goal in the 14th minute. Maddie Johnston was credited with the asst on the goal and added another score with a shot two minutes after the first goal. The Panthers capped off the scoring in the 26th minute with a goal from Brooklynn Fugel with help from Olivia Shaw.

"We competed well in the opening 20 minutes and then we struggled after their break through goal," said head coach Neil Macdonald.

GSU finished with 16 total shots, including 10 in the second half, while Jax State complied 10 shots in the match with seven of those attempts in the second half. Junior Kylie Wells finished with a match-high four shots in the second half. Sophomore Laleh Lonteen added a pair of shots, while senior Briana Eads and freshman Birta Birgisdóttir added a look at goal off the bench. Freshman Bailey Dean collected five saves in the loss.

"In the second half, we were excellent and we defended well and countered, possessed well in moments," continued Macdonald. "I think the second half gave us a platform to move forward from."

After the last non-conference weekend matches with ASU and Troy, the Gamecocks move into ASUN Conference action on Sunday, September 18 against the Owls of Kennesaw State.
