Unbeaten records in singles play by sophomore Ella Tuomela and freshmen Irene Artigas and Serafima Shastova highlighted an impressive weekend at the Stetson Fall Invite for Jacksonville State's women's tennis team.
"This was a very good weekend to see where we are at against good competition to finish the fall," head tennis coach Mike Mucci said after the invitational. "We saw some very good things in both singles and doubles, but we have a lot of room to grow leading into the spring season. We'll get back to work now in the offseason and fine-tune as many things as possible."
Tuomela, Artigas, and Shastova combined to go a perfect 9-0 in singles competition in the weekend's event. That invite, which contained a hidden duals format, saw JSU face off against Stetson and Coastal Carolina on Friday. After dueling with Stetson and Troy on Saturday, the Gamecocks finished their action on Sunday with more matches against Coastal Carolina.
Jax State dominated the first two days in DeLand, Fla. The doubles team of Shastova and Romane Mosse picked up a 6-4 win against Stetson while Tuomela and Anna Syrova rolled to a 6-0 victory in their match. The momentum carried over to the singles side as well as JSU claimed triumphs in five of their eight singles matches.
Day two saw even more decisive wins for the visitors from Alabama. Jacksonville State's doubles teams went 1-1 against competition from Troy while Dariana Prato and Zuzana Pavelekova downed a team from Stetson 7-5. Artigas, Mosse, Pavelekova, Prato, Shastova, and Tuomela all earned victories in singles matches, tallying a 6-2 record on the day for the Gamecocks.
JSU finished their fall slate with five more wins on Sunday in Florida. Tuomela and Kennedi Jones won their doubles match, 6-2, against competitors from Coastal Carolina while Artigas, Prato, Shastova, and Tuomela picked up singles wins.
With the conclusion of the Stetson Fall Invite, Gamecock tennis bids adieu to the fall portion of their schedule. While the non-conference schedule has yet to be announced, JSU's women will start ASUN Conference play on March 12 at Central Arkansas. After a trip to Eastern Kentucky the following Friday, Jacksonville State will have their conference home opener against North Alabama on March 19. Consecutive road trips to Queens and Liberty will follow before a trio of home matches against North Florida (March 31), Kennesaw State (Apr. 2), and Austin Peay (Apr. 8) rounds out the regular season.
