JSU Track & Field begins season with BSC Icebreaker
Jacksonville State's track and field team returns to competition for the first time this season at Friday's Birmingham Southern Icebreaker meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Friday's meet is the only December meet for the Gamecocks during the indoor schedule, which resumes January 14 with the UAB Vulcan Invite. JSU will have five indoor meets in all leading up to the ASUN championship, before transitioning to the outdoor schedule in March. The Gamecocks are coming off a seventh-place finish in last season's ASUN indoor championship in the team's first year back in the league.
The 2023 squad features freshmen Sambre Hofmann (jumps) and Lennon Ibsen (vault), along with several runners that competed in the fall cross country season. Javelin specialist Lydia Seals will begin competing when the outdoor season rolls around. For returners, JSU is led by a couple of fifth-year hurdlers in Ashton Coats and Leandra Custodio. Coats set new school records in both the indoor 60m hurdles and outdoor 100m hurdles a season ago.
Also on the track, JSU returns the sprints trio of Maddie Holman, Danielle Saunders and Rachel Peterson who are each coming off strong freshman seasons. In the field, multi-event specialist Carolina Minozzi leads the way along with pole vaulter Kayley Stanley, long jumper Emma Cape and thrower Kirsen Gardner.
