Following a perfect week on the courts last week, Gamecock men's tennis returns home to host Radford in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon. That showdown at the JSU Tennis Courts will begin around 2 p.m.
"We're excited to play another match against Radford tomorrow," associate head coach Trey Morris said. "They're a program that has had success historically. I remember growing up in my hometown of Athens, Ga., and watching them play NCAAs. They're normally a team that's come out of the Big South quite regularly so we're expecting a tough match.
"We're expecting their team to come in and give us a tough out," Morris said. "As we've gone through the season, though, it's been pretty clear that our guys are fighters and they're going to be up for that challenge."
Jax State (7-5) is coming off consecutive victories in friendly action. They played a competitive 4-3 nailbiter with Mercer in Calhoun County last Wednesday before freshman Xavier Sarda Marti clinched the match with a three-set triumph on court one. Then, on Sunday, the Gamecocks wasted little time pulling away in a 6-1 win at Alabama A&M. Now, the Red-and-White comes back to northeast Alabama to take on a .500 Radford (4-4) squad.
The Highlanders opened the 2023 campaign with three straight losses to ranked ACC foes in no. 14 Wake Forest and top-ranked Virginia. Since then, however, they have earned wins in four of their last five outings against the likes of UNC Greensboro (5-2), Abilene Christian (4-0), and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (4-0). RU downed Tennessee Tech, 6-1, on the road on Tuesday.
Jax State has not played Radford in men's tennis in recent history. The Highlanders should pose a strong challenge, though, as they are coming off a 14-win season in which they claimed the Big South Championship.
Admission to attend Wednesday's match in Jacksonville is free of charge and action will begin at 2 p.m. Links to follow along with live stats will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
