Expand your creative skill set and earn up to one hour of college credit by attending the Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop at the University of Alabama at Birmingham from June 12-30 at the UAB Spencer Honors House.
The Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop encourages students to find inspiration in Birmingham’s rich culture and history by exposing them to different genres such as poetry, fiction, memoir and magazine production.
Each week, students will draft, critique and revise original works. Their writings will be published in The Writer’s Block, the workshop’s yearly anthology.
“This workshop is built around our students’ finding inspiration, guidance and support to express their ideas,” said Tina Braziel, director of the Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop. “They’ll have an opportunity to not only earn college credit but also receive one-on-one attention to develop their creative skill set.”
Applications are open through April 15 or until all the spaces are filled. Rising high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible and can apply here. Thirty students will be selected to work closely with nationally acclaimed novelists, essayists and poets.
The cost of the camp is $800, and attendees can pay an additional $357 for an optional hour of college credit. Full and partial scholarships are available for students who find the fee cost-prohibitive.
The camp is co-sponsored by the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of English and University Honors Program. It is named in honor of Ada Long, Ph.D., founding director of the University Honors Program and former professor of English at UAB.
