Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, emphasized the critical nature of the current state of U.S. strategic forces during a hearing on the United States' strategic forces posture for fiscal year 2025. Lamborn highlighted various challenges and priorities in his opening remarks.
"Our hearing today is situated at a critical juncture for our strategic forces," stated Rep. Lamborn, underscoring the importance of the discussion.
Discussing the evolving landscape, Lamborn expressed concern over reports indicating Russia's potential deployment of nuclear weapons in space, a development previously considered implausible by rational nations. He noted, "Our efforts to replace our aging nuclear systems could not come at a more challenging time."
Addressing the implications of delays in nuclear modernization, Lamborn warned, "Decisions to defer nuclear modernization have left the recapitalization schedule devoid of flexibility with no room for delay." He emphasized the risks of an outdated nuclear triad in a changing global environment.
Lamborn also acknowledged Congress's actions to address these challenges, including mandating the development of a nuclear sea-launched cruise missile. However, he stressed the need for additional creative solutions and investments to maintain deterrence capabilities.
Furthermore, concerns were raised about the security of U.S. space assets in the face of growing threats from adversaries. Lamborn highlighted the importance of preparedness in the space domain and sought insights from military leaders on addressing emerging challenges.
The hearing aimed to assess programs, capabilities, and priorities related to U.S. strategic forces posture, with a focus on ensuring readiness and modernization in a rapidly evolving strategic landscape.
