Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative Mike Waltz (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Readiness, recently delivered a comprehensive opening statement at a joint hearing on the posture and readiness of the mobility enterprise.

During the hearing, Rep. Waltz emphasized the significance of the logistics enterprise in the face of evolving threats, stating, "Our logistics enterprise is more important than ever." He specifically highlighted the challenges posed by China as a pacing threat and the importance of effective planning for contested logistics operations.

Discussing recent developments, Rep. Waltz mentioned the closure of Red Hill and the completion of defueling, along with Congress designating TRANSCOM as the executive agent for bulk fuel management. He expressed interest in how TRANSCOM is handling this new responsibility, particularly in supporting strategic operations in the INDOPACOM region.

The Congressman also raised concerns regarding oversight of the Global Household Goods Contract, stressing the importance of a reliable PCS process for servicemembers and the need to avoid any missteps in the implementation of the new contract.

Addressing the readiness of the sealift fleet, Rep. Waltz highlighted the pressing need for recapitalization and the shortage of credentialed mariners. He pointed out that the crewing of vessels, including those in commercial programs like the Maritime Security Program, is a critical issue that needs to be addressed.

In conclusion, Rep. Waltz underscored the importance of executing logistical functions in a contested environment for success in strategic competitions. He stressed the necessity of ensuring rapid deployment, maneuverability, and sustenance of forces to effectively respond to contingencies and maintain a credible deterrent.

The hearing provided valuable insights into the challenges and priorities facing the mobility enterprise, with Rep. Waltz's remarks shedding light on key areas of focus for TRANSCOM and MARAD in enhancing readiness and operational effectiveness.
