Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, addressed critical issues concerning the Fiscal Year 2025 budget request for nuclear forces and atomic energy defense activities and programs during a recent hearing.
In his opening statement, Rep. Lamborn highlighted the importance of nuclear modernization in the budget request, emphasizing the pivotal role of strategic deterrence as the nation's highest priority mission. He expressed concerns about the evolving nuclear threat environment, particularly noting the aggressive actions of Russia and China in expanding their nuclear capabilities.
Rep. Lamborn also raised alarms about the increasing nuclear arsenals of China, stating, "Today, China has more than 500 operational nuclear weapons, double the number since 2020, and the Department of Defense projects it will possess over 1,500 by 2035." He underscored the need for enhanced preparedness to address the growing challenges posed by these developments.
Regarding the National Nuclear Security Administration, Rep. Lamborn acknowledged the support for production modernization in the budget request but voiced apprehensions about potential trade-offs with Stockpile Research, Technology, and Engineering activities. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining a robust production infrastructure and weapons laboratory complex to meet national security requirements effectively.
The Congressman also touched upon the Sentinel missile program, which aims to modernize the land-based leg of the triad by replacing the aging Minuteman system. He mentioned that the program is currently under a Nunn McCurdy review, limiting discussions on its specifics until a later date.
In conclusion, Rep. Lamborn reiterated his commitment to addressing the challenges and ensuring the robustness of the nation's nuclear enterprise in the face of evolving threats.
