U.S. Representative Mike Waltz (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Readiness, delivered an opening statement at a hearing focused on mobility aircraft connectivity capabilities. The discussion emphasized the critical role these capabilities play in closing logistics chains in joint military operations.
Rep. Waltz began by acknowledging the presence of witnesses and extending best wishes to General Minihan on his upcoming retirement. He highlighted the importance of mobility aircraft for national security, stating that they are essential for troop movements, logistics, and humanitarian missions. "Mobility aircraft are the lifeline of our military operations," he remarked.
Waltz pointed out that threats to mobility forces have increased due to more capable adversaries, citing advanced anti-aircraft systems and cyberattacks as examples. He stressed the necessity of secure and resilient connectivity for mobility forces operating in contested environments. "In today’s contested environments, maintaining reliable communication is not just a convenience—it’s a necessity," he stated.
To counteract these threats, Waltz called for investment in advanced communication systems that provide both line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight capabilities. He underscored that such technologies would enable seamless coordination even in hostile territories.
Training and readiness were also focal points in Waltz's remarks. He emphasized the need for Airmen to be proficient in operating under degraded communications and electronic warfare conditions. He cited Exercise Mobility Guardian as an example of realistic training exercises crucial for preparing forces to respond to real-world threats.
Additionally, Waltz highlighted the importance of partnerships and alliances in enhancing the relevance and survivability of mobility aircraft. "Interoperability with allied forces ensures that we can operate seamlessly as a coalition," he noted.
In conclusion, Waltz reiterated that mobility forces are fundamental to national defense and their effective operation in contested environments is vital for power projection. He expressed anticipation for insights from witnesses to ensure the military remains agile, adaptive, and equipped for future challenges.
