U.S. Representatives Mike Rogers (R-AL) and Adam Smith (D-WA), along with Trent Kelly (R-MS) and Joe Courtney (D-CT), have called for urgent clarification from Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro regarding reports of knowingly faulty welds on U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers. These representatives, who hold key positions on the House Armed Services Committee and its Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, emphasize the need to prioritize sailor safety.
In their letter, they stated: “The safety of our sailors is our top concern, and we must immediately understand any risks associated with the faulty work.”
The lawmakers demand transparency from both the Department of Defense and Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News (HII-NNS). They stress that these vessels are vital to national defense and must be protected from any actions jeopardizing U.S. security or service members.
While an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly underway, the committee seeks a comprehensive understanding of the issue's scope. They expect a briefing soon and answers to specific questions by October 11, 2024:
1. Does the Navy fully comprehend all instances of knowingly faulty welds by HII-NNS workers on in-service or under-construction vessels?
2. What assessment exists regarding threats posed by these welds to sailor safety?
3. What are the known impacts on affected vessels?
4. What recovery plans exist for impacted vessels?
5. What rework plans are in place for these vessels?
6. When did the Navy become aware of these issues?
The Armed Services Committee holds oversight jurisdiction over the Department of Defense as per House Rules, allowing them to conduct investigations into such matters.
