Washington, D.C.– U.S. Representative Trent Kelly (R-MS), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, expressed concerns and criticisms during a hearing on the Department of the Navy’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget request for seapower and projection forces.

Kelly highlighted the importance of maintaining America’s naval superiority in the face of challenges from China, stating, "A diminished Navy emboldens Beijing and undermines America’s position as the global maritime leader."

He called for a deeper level of self-reflection from the Navy, especially in light of uncertainties surrounding the Navy's shipbuilding programs and strategies for improvement.

Expressing disappointment in the budget request's deviation from agreed-upon plans, Kelly noted, "Reducing our order from two boats to one in this year’s budget does not inspire confidence, nor does it forecast stability to our industry partners or allies."

The delays in various shipbuilding programs, including submarines and surface vessels, raised serious concerns for Kelly, as they risked the Navy's ability to maintain a powerful and advanced fleet.

Kelly emphasized the need for a clear and coherent strategy from the Navy, particularly in the context of the 30-year shipbuilding plan, to ensure industry partners can align with and invest confidently.

In conclusion, Kelly called for transparency, proactive steps, and prompt resolution of issues to safeguard national security and the effectiveness of the naval forces.
