Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Trent Kelly (R-MS), Chairman of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, expressed his concerns during a hearing on Air Force projection forces aviation programs and capabilities related to the President’s FY25 budget request.
Kelly highlighted the importance of projection forces in today's global landscape, stating, "More than ever projection forces play an important part in the growing threats around the world. I know saying that has become somewhat of a cliché, but I have never seen a threat as great as it is today. In the last year I have literally been around the world and I’m more concerned than ever."
Addressing the modernization efforts within the Air Force, Kelly raised questions about the balance between retiring older aircraft and investing in newer capabilities. He specifically mentioned the retirement of the B-1 and B-2 bombers, the modernization of the B-52, and the procurement of the B-21, seeking insights from witnesses on this matter.
Furthermore, Kelly brought up issues identified during the recent Mobility Guardian Exercise, particularly the lack of secure communication links within the Air Force's Airlift and Air Refueling fleet. He emphasized the importance of learning from exercises like Mobility Guardian to address operational challenges effectively.
In conclusion, Kelly inquired about the potential for increasing air refueling capacity, referencing concerns raised by Admiral Paparo regarding the Joint Force's ability to support dynamic operations within the Area of Responsibility.
The hearing shed light on critical areas that require attention and strategic planning to enhance the Air Force's projection forces aviation programs and capabilities in response to evolving global threats.
